VICTEC Project funded by the EU Framework V programme under its e-learning actions.
The name stands for Virtual ICT with Empathic Characters, and the project, with five partners
in three countries, aims to apply synthetic characters and emergent narrative to Personal and
Social education (PSE) for children aged 8-12. 3D self-animating characters will create improvised
dramas in a virtual school, and the child user will be asked to help one of the characters to deal
with their problems in these dramas. The project is focusing on the issue of bullying. The building
of empathy between child and character is seen as a way of creating a novel educational experience.
EQUATOR The central goal of the Equator IRC is to promote the integration of the physical with the digital.
In particular, we are concerned with uncovering and supporting the variety of possible relationships
between physical and digital worlds. Our objective in doing this is to improve the quality of everyday
life by building and adapting technologies for a range of user groups and application domains.
DIGITAL CARE Project UCL has been working on the use of Virtual Environment within phobia treatment and research for
a number of years now. Previous work focussed on social phobias and we have been collaborating on a
number of experimental and pre-clinical trials on the utility of immersive virtual environments in
treating these conditions. Research includes agoraphobia and post-traumatic stress disorder.
CIMA-COURTROOM21 This research aims to build and study a model-driven software architecture for collaborative
virtual environments, taking into account the social and contextual factors associated with the
way people work within networked communities. Demonstrations of the use of Court technology. The
aim to establish Leeds as the UK Centre for the application of technology in Courts and Tribunals.
NIMIS Networked Interactive Media In Schools (NIMIS) is a project funded by the European Commission
addressing the research of "Experimental School Environments" (ESE) within the domain of "Intelligent
Information Interfaces" (i3). The main objective of NIMIS is to develop a classroom for early learners
which features a synergy between social, educational and technological factors.
