PhD Studentship available with immediate entry in 2007
Other Possible Projects:
Prospective PhD students are welcome to apply for supervision in any of the following projects
or propose a project in related areas.
|
CHAMELEON - CHAracter Morphing and Expressions with a Language Engine and
Oral Narative
SUPERVISOR: Dr. Daniela M. Romano - Computer Graphic/Cognitive Systems - Department of Computer Science,
Sheffield
Collaborative research with Prof. Roger Moore and Prof. Marilyn Walker
Currently a master student is working on the project
The project is concerned with the design and development of a configurable virtual interactive drama system.
A key aspect of the system is a highly parameterized model of embodied conversational agents (ECAs), whose
physical and verbal expression arise from the individual cognitive, social and personality models.

TOUCH-Tactile OUtput Conveyed by Haptic
SUPERVISOR: Dr. Daniela M. Romano - Computer Graphic/Cognitive Systems - Department of Computer Science,
Sheffield
Currently various undergraduates and
Master students are working on the early stages of this project.
How are objects conveyed in a virtual environments? We are guided in the recognition/discrimination
task by our senses, which we constantly do a reality-check.
The project could take any of the following routes:
- develop ergonomic interaction modalities that use the sense of touch in virtual environment
- effectiveness of touch in virtual environments to convey a sense of presence

Virtual ExtReme Team-building EXperience (VERTEX)
SUPERVISOR: Dr. Daniela M. Romano - Computer Graphic/Cognitive Systems - Department of Computer Science,
Sheffield
Collaborative research with
IRIT - Institut de Recherche en Informatique de Toulous
The aim of this project is to investigate how in a extreme situations humans collaborate and to adapt to
the requirements of the situation to solve problems.
Virtual Environments provide a mean to rehearse situations and experiences that are dangerous or otherwise
uncontrollable in the real world.
The project could take one of more of the following routes:
- continue the work already started with the project
DICE (flexible domain independent virtual environment)
- seamless interaction modalities with virtual environments
- effectiveness and sense of presence in virtual environemnts
- collaboration through media

VACUOS - Virtual ACustic Urban Open Space
SUPERVISOR: Dr. Daniela M. Romano - Computer Graphic/Cognitive Systems - Department of Computer Science,
Sheffield
Collaborative research with the School of Architecture
Currrently 2 Master students are working on the early stages of this project.
Improve
the design of urban open spaces though the simulation of their layout,
material and response to sound.
An architect might use such tools to evaluate a proposed urban
soundscape design, a designer of virtual environment might use it to
evaluate the user experience in different open urban space P.S. Vacuos -- This is the sign of the wise cleric, the ancient
druid, the solitary sage, the individual who knows much but says
little. Elemental Icon: The frog. |
