1 - Investigating Learning Algorithms in Artificial (Spiking) Neuronal Networks with application in Neuroprosthetics

We are looking for a doctoral student with a strong interest in computational neuroscience and neural engineering. Within this project, s/he will develop a methodology for configuring  large spiking artificial neural  networks with the view to translate raw sensory input information to higher areas representation, and application to neuroprosthetics. The ideal candidate has experience with optimisation methods and artificial (spiking) neural networks. Applicants should hold a 4 year Bachelors or a Masters degree in a quantitative discipline (e.g. computer science, electronic engineering, physics, mathematics). Good knowledge of differential equations, numerical methods and strong programming skills are required. 

2 - Machine Learning Methods for the Analysis of Behavioural Experiments in Neuroscience 

We are looking for a doctoral student with a strong interest in computational neuroscience and machine learning. Within this project, s/he will develop novel methodologies for the automatic analysis of complex trajectories in behavioural experiments. The ideal candidate has experience with machine learning methods and Python/Matlab. Applicants should hold a 4 year Bachelors or a Masters degree in a quantitative discipline (e.g. computer science, electronic engineering, physics, mathematics). Good math background and strong programming skills are required. 


Environment

The candidate will be joining the Machine Learning Group, within the Department of Computer Science, which was ranked 5th in the UK according to the Research Excellence Framework exercise (REF2014).  The University of Sheffield is a world top 100 University (QS rankings) and there are six Nobel Prize winners amongst Sheffield alumni and academics. Sheffield is well connected by train with the International Manchester airport (1h15) and London St Pancras (2h05). The Peak District, the first and largest of Britain’s National Parks, is just 8km from the Sheffield city centre.
