RECENT NEWS

  1. •I have been awarded a Faculty of Engineering Awards for Teaching Excellence for 2012. The awards are based on an annual student poll, in which students from all departments of the Faculty of Engineering vote for the best teacher from their studies (November 2012).

  2. •Our paper Andrea Varga, Amparo E. Cano and Fabio Ciravegna: Exploring the Similarity between Social Knowledge Sources and Twitter for Cross-domain Topic Classification won the best paper award at the First international workshop on knowledge extractions and consolidation co-located with the 11th International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC2012), Boston, 11/12 November 2012 

  3. •Our spin-out K-Now has spun out a new company: The Floow, developing telematic systems to make vehicles safer.

  4. •IDA, the Irish Development Agency has invited me as reviewer of the Bell Labs Ireland research centre for two years running  (November 2011 and November 2012)

  5. •Science Foundation Ireland has invited me as reviewer for the midterm scientific review of DERI, the largest semantic web and web science research centre in the world (July 2011).

  6. •The University of Sheffield has been has been named University of the Year in the 2011 Times Higher Education Awards.


PROJECTS NEWS

  1. •WeSenseIt, the European project I coordinate on Citizen Water Observatories kicked off in Venice on October 1, 2012.

  2. •The EPSRC funded project “Lodie: Web Scale Information Extraction via Linked Open Data” started in September 2012.

  3. •The EPSRC project funded “RAnDMS (Real time Analysis of Digital Media Streams)”, started in May 2012

  4. •A project funded by the Medical Research Council “Time to change! Using the transition from school to university to promote healthy lifestyle habits in young people”, started in April 2012.
