Overview

The Midlands Graduate School in the Foundations of Computing Science (MGS) was established in 1999 as a collaboration between researchers at the Universities of Birmingham, Leicester, Nottingham, and later Sheffield. It has two main goals: to equip PhD students with a sound basis for their research by deepening their knowledge on the mathematical and conceptual foundations of computing; and to provide a platform for making contacts with established researchers in the field and with their peers who are at a similar stage in their research careers.

This year's MGS is hosted by the Department of Computer Science at the University of Sheffield. It will start on April 07 and finish on April 11 after lunch.

Information about previous events can be found at the MGS web site.

Programme

MGS 2015 consists of eight courses, each with four or five hours of lectures and exercise sessions. Three of the courses are introductory or core; they should be taken by all participants. The other courses are more advanced or specialised. Participants may select them depending on their interests.

This year the invited lectures will be given by Prof Jeremy Gibbons, Oxford.

In addition there will be early evening sessions in which participants can briefly present and discuss their own research.

Core Courses

Category Theory (CAT) Roy Crole, Leicester
Typed Lambda Calculus (LAM) Paul Blain Levy, Birmingham
Patterns in Functional Programming (PFP) Jeremy Gibbons, Oxford

Advanced Courses

Course Schedule

Lecture Halls

The MGS is held in the Pam Liversidge annex of the
Sir Frederick Mappin Building at the University of Sheffield. It can be accessed from the main entrance of the Mappin Building. On Saturday morning, lectures will be in different lecture theatres in the Mappin building.
  • Lectures (L) : lecture theatres PLB-LT1 and PLB-LT2 (MAPP-LT06 Saturday morning)
  • Exercise sessions (E): rooms MAPP-LT 08 and MAPP-LT09
  • Coffee and lunch breaks: Atrium of Pam Liversidge Building (John Carr Library on Saturday morning)
All room are signposted from the main entrance. To reach the Pam Liversidge Building, turn right from the entrance hall of Mappin Building and follow the corridors until you reach the new annex. Find the stairs or elevator and descend to the lowest level (Level A) for the lecture halls LT1/LT2.

The atrium, where coffee breaks and lunches take place during the week, is at Level B of the same building.

To reach MAPP-LT08 and MAPP-LT09 from Pam Liversidge building, ascend to the top level (Level F) and follow the left-hand corridor until you reach the old part of Mappin building. You will find LT08/09 by following the corridor. LT06 for the Saturday morning lectures is nearby.

To reach LT08/09 from the entrance hall of Mappin Building, follow the signs along the left-hand corridor. They are located at the third floor of the building.

The John Carr Library, for the Saturday coffee break and lunch, is located in the entrance hall of Mapping Building.
