Teaching

Courses and series of lectures delivered in functional programming languages, artificial intelligence, intelligent knowledge-based systems, research in computational linguistics, theoretical linguistics, machine translation, philosophy of language, foundations of artificial intelligence, and logic and language. New first year Undergraduate Artificial Intelligence Course from 2001.

Lectures and seminars on the above and other topics delivered in many Universities in Britain, the U.S., South America, Japan, Australia, Canada, Europe and Africa.

I have supervised the work of graduate and/or undergraduate students at all the above institutions, and have examined doctoral theses at (among others) the Universities of London, Essex, Sussex, Durham, South Bank, Brighton, Lausanne, Louvain, Antwerp, Stanford, UMIST, Barcelona, Leeds, Fribourg, Brunel, Quebec, Cambridge, Manchester, Brandeis, Liege, Surrey, East Anglia, Sunderland, Paris and Edinburgh.

External examiner. Artificial Intelligence BScs at the Universities of Surrey and Malta, and formerly at the University of Birmingham; The University of Sussex (BA/BSc); The University of Exeter MSc in New Generation Computing; UMIST BSc degrees involving computational linguistics; School of Epistemics, Edinburgh University, and external examiner of the MSc in Epistemics.

Recent Positions

In 2010 I took up a position as Senior Research Scientist at the Florida Institute of Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC) the leading Artificial Intelligence Centre in Florida. I retain links with the Oxford internet Institute, where I was a Senior Research Fellow and am now a Research Associate. In 1993 I took up a Chair of Artificial Intellegence at the University of Sheffield, and also became founding Director of the Institute of Language, Speech and Hearing (ILASH). Since then I have raised over 30 million pounds in grants from research councils and the EC, and the Natural Language Processing Research Group, which I led until 2009, and which constitutes over half the Department's research. From 1985-93 I was Director of the Computing Research Laboratory, a new institute set up by the State of New Mexico as a center of excellence in artificial intelligence with funds totalling about $8 million over five years. These funds were wholly replaced by grants and contracts from federal and industrial sources, and CRL became financially stable with a budget of about $4 million a year. My own research group at CRL (the largest and best funded) was rated among the top five nationally in its area by the Laboratory's International Advisory Board.
