Performance degradation in noisy, real-world environments is probably the most significant factor limiting take-up of Automatic Speech Recognition technology. RESPITE is researching two related approaches to improving recogniser robustness. 'Missing data recognition' focuses on those spectral-temporal regions which are uncorrupted by other sound sources. 'Multistream recognition' combines information from several independent analyses. RESPITE is targeting in-car applications.
